How to get your Green Labourer CSCS Card

If you want to work on a construction site, chances are that you will be asked if you have a valid CSCS card.  If you want to be a plant operator then it's the Green Labourer card that you'll need.

Types of CSCS Cards

There is a CSCS card to cover most occupations in the construction industry.  The type of job you want, your current job, your previous experience and any qualifications you have will determine which type of card you should apply for.  Click here for more information on the different types of CSCS cards available.

How to get a Green Labourer CSCS Card

The most common route to getting the Green Labourer CSCS card is to do a Site Safety Plus 1 day Health and Safety Awareness course plus a Health, Safety and Environment Test which is a 45 minute, multiple choice test that is completed on a computer at a test centre.  These don't have to be taken at the same time or on the same day.

An alternative route is to have achieved a QCF/SCQF Level 1 Award Health and Safety in a Construction Environment plus passed the computer test.

You must also pass the CITB Operatives Health, Safety and Environment test (touch screen test) within two years prior to applying for a new card.  We are also able to offer this test.

How long does your card last?

Once you have received the Green Labourer Card it is valid for five years.  To renew it you must once again do a health and safety awareness course and pass the Health, Safety and Environment test (touch screen test).

Please note: even if your CSCS card is still valid you MUST have passed the Health, Safety and Environment test (touch screen test) within the last two years to be able to undertake any new or renew any CPCS or NPORS (CSCS) operator tests.

About CSCS

Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) is the leading skills certification scheme within the UK construction industry.

CSCS cards provide proof that individuals working on construction sites have the required training and qualifications for the type of work they carry out.

The Scheme keeps a database of people working in construction who have achieved, or are committed to achieving a recognised construction related qualification.

Most principal contractors and major house builders require construction workers on their sites to hold a valid CSCS card.

You may be aware that the requirements from the CITB have changed.  If you are working or entering the construction industry as an operative you will now require a  CSCS ‘ Green Labourer Card ‘ which has replaced the previous CSCS Construction Site Operative card.
